World No.1 Jannik Sinner and women’s top seed Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the third round of Wimbledon 2026 after hard-fought victories on Wednesday.
Sinner defeated Portugal’s Nuno Borges 7-6(4), 7-6(2), 6-4, while Sabalenka battled past American McCartney Kessler 6-1, 7-6(9).
Sinner showcased composure and precision on Centre Court, raising his level in crucial moments to seal his 95th Grand Slam win — the most by any Italian player. The defending champion will next face American Jenson Brooksby as he continues his bid to retain the title.
Sabalenka, meanwhile, survived a major scare against Kessler. After cruising through the first set, she trailed 2-5 in the second before clawing back to force a tie-break. The Belarusian saved four set points and edged an 11-9 thriller to secure victory after one hour and 39 minutes.
Her comeback kept alive her dream of winning a maiden Wimbledon crown. Sabalenka will next meet Latvia’s Jeena Ostapenko, who advanced with a straight-sets win over Antonia Ruzic.
Both top seeds displayed resilience and championship mentality, setting up exciting third-round clashes as the tournament intensifies.
