Pakistan has announced the restoration of the historic Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha Sahib in Farooqabad after the reported demolition of the 125-year-old Sikh shrine sparked protests from the local Sikh community and drew strong condemnation from India.

The incident has become a significant issue in India-Pakistan relations, with New Delhi urging Islamabad to investigate the matter, punish those responsible, and ensure the protection of religious minorities and their places of worship.

India Condemns Demolition of Historic Gurdwara

India’s Ministry of External Affairs strongly criticized the reported demolition, describing it as a “highly deplorable and targeted act of vandalism” against a revered Sikh religious site.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal called on Pakistan to conduct a swift investigation, bring those responsible to justice, and restore the damaged portions of the gurdwara at the earliest.

India also urged Pakistan to fulfil its responsibility to safeguard minority communities and protect religious sites across the country.

According to the ministry, incidents affecting minority places of worship remain a matter of concern and require prompt action from the authorities.

Pakistan Government Orders Inquiry

Following protests by members of the Sikh community, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz took notice of the incident.

Punjab’s Minister for Minorities, Ramesh Singh Arora, visited the site along with district officials and announced that restoration work would begin immediately.

The minister also directed the concerned departments to investigate the ownership and legal status of the land. Initial findings reportedly suggest the property was not registered under the Auqaf Department.

Officials have been instructed to submit a detailed fact-finding report before further legal action is taken.

Local Sikh Community Raises Concerns

The demolition prompted protests from local Sikhs, who described the structure as an important part of their religious and cultural heritage.

Community members demanded accountability for the demolition and called for the complete restoration of the historic gurdwara.

Government representatives assured the community that the shrine’s restoration would be carried out while the investigation continues.

Local Traders Express Different Concerns

Some traders and residents operating near the site presented a different perspective.

They said the property had remained unused for several decades and that families and businesses had gradually settled in the area. They appealed to the government to consider rehabilitation measures if restoration work affects their homes or livelihoods.

Authorities have not yet announced any decisions regarding relocation or compensation.

Why the Issue Matters

The reported demolition has attracted international attention because it concerns the preservation of religious heritage and the protection of minority communities.

The announcement of restoration is expected to ease immediate concerns, but the outcome of the official inquiry and future action against those responsible will remain under close watch.

The incident also highlights the importance of protecting historic places of worship while addressing local community concerns through lawful and transparent processes.

As investigations continue, both governments are expected to closely monitor developments surrounding the restoration of the historic Sikh shrine.
