Sonia Gandhi Targets Modi Government Over Gaza Policy, Says ‘India’s Silence Cannot Be Explained’

Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has criticised the Narendra Modi-led Central government over its response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, alleging that India’s continued silence on the humanitarian crisis is inconsistent with both the country’s moral values and strategic interests.

In an opinion article, Gandhi argued that India’s approach to the Gaza conflict represents a departure from its long-standing foreign policy principles.

Sonia Gandhi Criticises India’s Position on Gaza

Gandhi said the humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached alarming levels, citing reports of civilian casualties, including children, and widespread destruction of schools, hospitals and other essential infrastructure.

She claimed that the scale of devastation and the suffering of civilians demanded a stronger international response.

Referring to the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas on Israel, Gandhi described it as “dastardly” and “absolutely unacceptable.” However, she argued that Israel’s subsequent military campaign had resulted in severe humanitarian consequences.

She also referred to statements made by senior Israeli leaders, alleging they reflected an intent to completely besiege Gaza.

Criticism of the Modi Government

Questioning New Delhi’s diplomatic stance, Gandhi said India had remained largely silent despite growing international concern over the situation.

She described the Modi government’s response as one of “silence and inaction” and argued that it neither reflected India’s historical foreign policy traditions nor served the country’s national interest.

According to Gandhi, India has historically supported principles of national sovereignty, peace and post-colonial solidarity.

Justice Muralidhar Report Mentioned

Gandhi also criticised the government’s response to a report by former Justice S. Muralidhar on Gaza, alleging that it had received little official attention.

She linked the issue to Justice Muralidhar’s previous observations on the 2020 Delhi riots, claiming that the report had been ignored despite renewed public discussion.

Concerns Over India’s Middle East Policy

The Congress leader further argued that India’s growing strategic engagement with Israel comes at a time when several countries have recognised Palestine and international organisations continue to raise concerns over the humanitarian situation.

She said India’s current approach could affect its long-standing relationships with countries across West Asia.

Gandhi also referred to the case of five-year-old Hind Rajab, whose death during the conflict drew global attention, describing it as a symbol of the humanitarian impact of the war.

Calls for a Stronger Indian Voice

Concluding her remarks, Gandhi urged India to speak more actively on the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

She said India’s foreign policy should reflect both its historical values and humanitarian principles, adding that the country’s continued silence on the issue “cannot be explained” from either a moral or strategic perspective.

The Central government had not immediately responded to Gandhi’s latest remarks at the time of publication.
