In a stunning display of grit and precision, Ireland defeated India by 34 runs in the opening T20I of the 2026 series at the Civil Service Cricket Club, Belfast.

The hosts posted a competitive 182/9 in their 20 overs, riding on crucial middle-order partnerships and aggressive death-over hitting. India, despite a fiery start in the powerplay, faltered under sustained pressure and were bowled out for 148 in 18.5 overs.

Ireland’s innings began shakily at 36/3 in the powerplay, but steady contributions in the middle overs rebuilt momentum. The death overs proved decisive, with Ireland adding 45 runs despite losing four wickets. Matthew Humphreys and Jai Moondra played pivotal roles in restricting India’s chase, with Humphreys claiming key wickets and Moondra delivering a nervy yet effective 18th over.

India’s chase looked promising early on, reaching 68/3 in the powerplay. However, the middle overs saw a slowdown, and the lower order collapsed under mounting pressure. Harshit Rana’s late six briefly revived hopes, but Tim Tector’s sharp catch at long-on sealed Ireland’s monumental win.

This victory marks a watershed moment for Irish cricket, as they overcame the reigning world champions with discipline and determination. For India, the defeat serves as a wake-up call ahead of the remaining matches in the series.
