A controversy has erupted ahead of the scheduled release of the animated movie “Mahaprabhu Jagannath”, with the Gajapati Maharaja of Puri raising objections to the film’s content and urging its makers to postpone its release pending expert review.

The film, produced by Bhubaneswar-based M/s Ele Animations Pvt Ltd, is slated for release in cinema halls on July 10, 2026. However, concerns emerged after the movie’s official trailer began circulating on social media platforms.

Gajapati Maharaja Raises Concerns Over Trailer

In a public appeal, the Gajapati Maharaja stated that the trailer appears to portray a storyline that is allegedly inconsistent with traditional scriptural accounts related to Mahaprabhu Shree Jagannath.

According to the appeal, any depiction of Lord Jagannath’s life, teachings, and divine glory should strictly follow sacred texts and scriptural traditions, particularly those attributed to Maharshi Vedavyasa.

The Gajapati Maharaja expressed concern that any fictional or altered portrayal of Mahaprabhu Jagannath could potentially hurt the religious sentiments of millions of devotees in India and across the world.

Call for Expert Review Before Release

Seeking a resolution, the Gajapati Maharaja appealed to the filmmakers to postpone the movie’s theatrical and digital release until its content is examined by experts nominated by the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA).

The appeal emphasized the need for authentication of the film’s storyline and script to ensure that the portrayal remains faithful to the revered traditions associated with Lord Jagannath.

Growing Debate Among Devotees

The issue has sparked discussions among devotees, religious scholars, and cultural observers, particularly after excerpts from the trailer gained attention online.

Many devotees have called for greater sensitivity when depicting religious subjects, while others have urged authorities and filmmakers to engage in dialogue to address concerns before the film’s release.

Awaiting Response From Producers

As of now, the producers of Mahaprabhu Jagannath have not publicly responded to the appeal. It remains unclear whether the filmmakers will seek consultation with religious experts or proceed with the scheduled July 10 release.

The controversy is expected to intensify in the coming days as devotees, cultural organisations, and temple stakeholders closely watch developments surrounding the film.
