What began as a normal Wednesday evening ended in unimaginable tragedy for a family in Singpur village under Sanakhemundi block in Ganjam district.
A powerful firecracker explosion inside their home claimed the life of 22-year-old Akash Das and left his parents fighting for their lives.
According to preliminary information received by police, Akash was handling a hand bomb inside the house when it slipped from his hand and exploded with devastating force. The blast rocked the quiet village and severely injured his father, Santosh Das (48), and mother, Bishnu Das (45).
Local residents rushed to the spot after hearing the loud explosion. They immediately rescued the injured family members and rushed them to the Digapahandi Community Health Centre in an 108 ambulance.
Doctors at the health centre declared Akash dead, while his parents were admitted in critical condition. The couple continues to receive treatment there.
Police from Patpur police station reached the hospital, seized the body, and sent it to Berhampur Medical College and Hospital for postmortem examination.
An unnatural death case (No. 12/26) has been registered, and an investigation is underway, said Inspector-in-Charge Dipti Ranjan Behera.
In a conflicting statement, Akash’s mother told police that her son had finished dinner and gone to sleep when the explosion occurred. She claimed the blast happened amid heavy rain, strong winds, and thunder.
Police are verifying all versions and probing the exact sequence of events. Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
