In a landmark moment for Indian-origin footballers, Kerala-rooted winger Tahsin Mohammed Jamshid is set to become the first Indian passport holder to be part of a FIFA World Cup squad after earning selection in Qatar’s team for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The 20-year-old footballer has been included in Qatar’s final squad for the global tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. His selection marks a historic achievement and has generated excitement among football fans in both Qatar and India.

A Proud Moment for Kerala and Indian Football Fans

Although Tahsin will represent Qatar on football’s biggest stage, his journey has strong Indian roots. Born in Doha on June 16, 2006, Tahsin is the son of Malayali parents from Kerala.

His father, Jamshid, originally from Thalassery, was a footballer who represented the University of Calicut before moving to Qatar, where he now works as an accountant. His mother, Shyma, hails from Visakhapatnam.

Tahsin’s football journey began at a young age, inspired by his father’s passion for the game. He later joined the prestigious Aspire Football Academy, widely regarded as one of the best football development centres in the world.

Rapid Rise in Qatar Football

Tahsin’s rise through the ranks has been impressive. He represented Qatar at the Under-16 and Under-17 levels before making his senior breakthrough.

In March 2024, he made his professional debut for Al Duhail against Al Rayyan in the Qatar Stars League. With that appearance, he became the first Indian-origin footballer to play in the Qatar Stars League.

His consistent performances and development eventually earned him a place in Qatar’s World Cup squad announced by head coach Julen Lopetegui.

How Can Tahsin Play for Qatar?

Despite holding an Indian passport, Tahsin is eligible to represent Qatar because he possesses a Qatari Mission Passport, a special document issued to foreign-born athletes competing for the country in international sports.

The document allows athletes to represent Qatar while retaining their original nationality. It is primarily intended for sporting purposes and carries limited civil privileges.

‘Qatar Is My Own Country’

Speaking about his World Cup selection, Tahsin expressed pride and confidence in representing Qatar.

“For me, Qatar is my own country. I’m a Qatari citizen. Having already played for Qatar’s U-17 and U-19 teams, this selection didn’t come as a surprise,” he said.

His statement reflects the strong connection he has developed with Qatar, where he was born, raised and trained as a footballer.

Qatar’s FIFA World Cup 2026 Campaign

Qatar has been drawn in Group B and will begin its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign against Switzerland on June 14 at Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco, California.

Football fans will now be watching closely as Tahsin Jamshid prepares to make history on the world stage.

A Milestone Beyond Borders

For a country like India, which is still striving for its first FIFA World Cup appearance, Tahsin’s achievement serves as an inspiration for thousands of young footballers. His journey from a family with roots in Kerala to a place in a World Cup squad highlights the growing global impact of Indian-origin athletes.

While he will wear Qatar’s colours, many football fans in India will proudly follow his progress as a symbol of what talent, dedication and opportunity can achieve.
