The Odisha government has unveiled a major school education reform for the academic year 2026-27, introducing a new timetable, 10 bagless days, vocational learning opportunities, and a revised curriculum aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The Odisha School Education Programme Authority (OSEPA) has issued detailed guidelines and sample timetables for all government and government-aided schools from Sishu Vatika (pre-school) to Class VIII.

The move marks a significant step in implementing NEP 2020 across the state’s school education system.

New Curriculum Based on Odisha Curriculum Framework 2025

As part of the reform, Odisha has revised its curriculum framework and introduced new textbooks developed under the Odisha Curriculum Framework for School Education-2025.

The updated curriculum focuses on experiential learning, competency development, critical thinking, creativity, and holistic growth among students.

Officials said the changes are designed to make learning more engaging, practical, and student-friendly.

Odisha Schools to Observe 10 Bagless Days

One of the key highlights of the new policy is the introduction of 10 bagless days during the academic year.

On these days, students will attend school without carrying school bags. Instead, they will participate in hands-on activities, skill-based learning, vocational exposure, art, sports, and community engagement programmes.

The initiative aims to reduce academic pressure while making education more enjoyable and meaningful.

230 Working Days Planned for Academic Year

According to the guidelines, schools will function for a total of 230 days during the academic year.

The schedule includes:

  • 20 days for assessments and evaluations
  • 20 days for sports, annual functions, cultural programmes, and celebrations
  • 190 days for classroom teaching and learning activities

The structured academic calendar is expected to ensure better planning and effective implementation of educational activities.

New School Timings Announced

Under the revised timetable:

Monday to Friday

  • School timing: 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Saturday

  • School timing: 6:30 AM to 12:30 PM

The new schedule will be followed by all government and government-aided schools across Odisha.

Seven Periods Daily, Focus on Practical Learning

The timetable provides for seven periods each working day, resulting in 42 periods per week.

Special emphasis has been placed on:

  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Arts Education
  • Physical Education
  • Vocational Education

To encourage activity-based learning, schools will conduct two combined periods of 80 to 90 minutes for project work, experiments, role plays, presentations, practical exercises, and collaborative learning activities.

Vocational Education Gets Greater Importance

For students in Classes VI to VIII, vocational education has been integrated into the weekly timetable.

One vocational education period each week will be used for bagless day activities, preferably on Saturdays.

The initiative aims to develop practical skills, career awareness, and problem-solving abilities among students from an early age.

Greater Emphasis on Arts and Sports

In line with NEP 2020, Odisha has increased the focus on arts and physical education.

Students will participate in both theoretical and practical sessions to support their overall development.

Education officials believe that equal importance to academics, sports, and creative activities will help students build confidence, leadership skills, and teamwork.

Reform Aims to Reduce Academic Pressure

The School and Mass Education Department said the new timetable has been designed to reduce the burden of subjects on students while promoting joyful and holistic learning.

By combining classroom instruction with practical activities, vocational education, arts, and sports, the government hopes to create a more balanced and inclusive learning environment.

Education experts have welcomed the initiative, saying it aligns with national education goals and modern teaching practices.

The reform is expected to bring greater uniformity in school functioning and strengthen activity-based, skill-oriented education across Odisha.

With the introduction of bagless days, vocational learning, and a revised curriculum, Odisha is taking a significant step towards transforming school education under the vision of NEP 2020.
