The Odisha government is likely to extend the ongoing summer vacation in schools across the state due to the prevailing heatwave conditions, with a final decision expected soon.
School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond indicated that the government is reviewing the situation closely. He stated that the health and safety of students remain the top priority, and reopening dates will depend on the intensity of the heatwave in the coming days.
Officials confirmed that schools were earlier scheduled to reopen on June 22. However, with temperatures soaring and concerns over student safety rising, the government is considering prolonging the holiday period.
The minister explained that the decision will be taken after assessing weather conditions statewide. Reports suggest that monsoon is expected to reach Odisha by mid-June, but the El Niño effect could influence weather patterns and prolong heatwave conditions.
Parents and teachers expressed concern over the extreme heat, urging authorities to prioritise student welfare. The government assured that any extension of the summer vacation will be announced after a thorough review.
