India head coach Gautam Gambhir has finally spoken about the decision to remove Rishabh Pant as the vice-captain of the Indian Test team, clarifying that the move is not intended to change the wicketkeeper-batter’s natural approach to the game.
Pant was recently replaced by KL Rahul as vice-captain ahead of India’s upcoming one-off Test against Afghanistan, a decision that surprised many fans and cricket experts.
The change came after a difficult period for Pant, who faced criticism for his performances during India’s recent Test series against South Africa and a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign.
Gambhir Wants Pant to Adapt, Not Change
Speaking ahead of the Afghanistan Test, Gambhir emphasized that the team management continues to value Pant’s aggressive style but expects him to better assess match situations.
“We don’t want Rishabh Pant to change, but international cricket demands players to respect match situations,” Gambhir said.
The statement suggests that while Pant’s attacking instincts remain an important asset for India, the coaching staff believes greater situational awareness will help him contribute more consistently at the highest level.
South Africa Series Raised Questions
Pant came under scrutiny during India’s recent 0-2 Test series defeat against South Africa.
One of the biggest talking points was his dismissal in the second Test, where he attempted an aggressive stroke despite the team’s difficult position. The wicket attracted criticism from former players and analysts, who argued that the shot selection did not suit the match situation.
The series defeat intensified discussions around leadership roles and accountability within the Test setup.
Assistant Coach Reveals Pant’s Reaction
India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate also addressed the issue and revealed that Pant has handled the leadership change professionally.
According to the former Netherlands international, Pant has maintained a positive attitude and remains an influential figure in the dressing room despite no longer holding the vice-captaincy.
“There have been honest conversations, and we have received no complaints from Rishabh,” he said.
Leadership Beyond Titles
The Indian team management believes leadership is not limited to official designations.
Doeschate noted that Pant continues to play a key role within the squad due to his experience, personality, and influence on younger players.
“I don’t think you need a formal title to be a leader. Rishabh understands that and remains committed to helping the team,” he explained.
The coaching staff views Pant as one of the most energetic and positive members of the squad, someone who contributes significantly to team culture.
KL Rahul Takes Over as Vice-Captain
With Pant stepping aside, KL Rahul will serve as deputy to Test captain Shubman Gill.
Rahul’s experience across formats and his recent consistency with the bat are believed to have influenced the selectors’ decision.
The leadership reshuffle is part of India’s efforts to strengthen the Test side ahead of a crucial phase in the international calendar.
Pant Still Central to India’s Plans
Despite losing the vice-captaincy, Pant remains a key member of India’s Test team.
The management has repeatedly stressed that his aggressive batting style is one of the team’s biggest strengths. However, they would like to see him balance attacking cricket with greater awareness of game situations.
Team officials believe that such adjustments could help Pant maximize his impact while continuing to play the fearless brand of cricket that has made him one of India’s most exciting players.
Focus Shifts to Afghanistan Test
As India prepare for the one-off Test against Afghanistan, attention will now shift from leadership discussions to on-field performances.
Pant will have an opportunity to silence critics and reaffirm his importance to the Test side, while KL Rahul begins his tenure as vice-captain alongside captain Shubman Gill.
The upcoming match could prove significant for both players as India looks to build momentum for future international assignments.
