A fresh political confrontation erupted on Friday after the government informed the Supreme Court that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is personally monitoring developments related to the NEET-UG paper leak investigation.

The statement, made during a court hearing, triggered sharp reactions from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who questioned the government’s handling of one of India’s biggest examination controversies. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) responded strongly, accusing the Congress leader of misrepresenting the government’s position.

Supreme Court Informed About PM’s Monitoring

During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Supreme Court that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was personally supervising concerns related to the cancellation of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) and the ongoing investigation into the alleged paper leak.

The submission came after the apex court sought details from the Centre regarding the progress of the investigation and measures being implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The Supreme Court also expressed concern over the impact of examination irregularities on students and their families, emphasizing the need for accountability and stronger safeguards.

Rahul Gandhi Questions Government Accountability

Reacting to reports from the court proceedings, Rahul Gandhi took a swipe at the government and Prime Minister Modi.

The Leader of the Opposition argued that if the Prime Minister was personally supervising the issue now, questions should also be raised about how such a major examination breach occurred in the first place.

Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly raised concerns about transparency, examination integrity, and student welfare. In recent weeks, he has also criticized the government’s handling of issues related to competitive examinations and educational reforms.

What Is the NEET Paper Leak Controversy?

The National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled the NEET-UG examination conducted on May 3 after allegations of a paper leak surfaced.

NEET is India’s largest medical entrance examination and serves as the gateway for admission to undergraduate medical courses across the country.

Following the controversy, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) launched an inquiry into the alleged leak. Several petitions were also filed before the Supreme Court seeking transparency, accountability, and protection of students’ interests.

The case has sparked nationwide debate about examination security and the reliability of large-scale competitive tests.

BJP Hits Back at Rahul Gandhi

The BJP strongly rejected Rahul Gandhi’s remarks and accused him of politicizing a sensitive issue affecting millions of students.

BJP leader Amit Malviya described the Congress leader’s comments as irresponsible and argued that monitoring an investigation should not be interpreted as responsibility for the alleged leak itself.

Party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi also criticized Rahul Gandhi, saying the government’s statement about monitoring the issue was being misrepresented for political purposes.

According to BJP leaders, the focus should remain on strengthening examination systems and ensuring justice for affected students rather than engaging in political attacks.

Supreme Court Seeks Detailed Affidavit

The Supreme Court has directed the Centre to submit a detailed affidavit explaining the investigation process and the safeguards being introduced to prevent future examination leaks.

The court observed that students invest years of hard work, time, and emotional effort in preparing for competitive examinations, making any breach of trust deeply concerning.

Judges also questioned whether existing safeguards were implemented effectively despite previous recommendations and reforms.

Focus Remains on Students

While political exchanges continue, students and parents remain focused on the outcome of the investigation and the future of the examination process.

Authorities have indicated that new monitoring mechanisms and security measures are being introduced for future examinations. The findings of the investigation are expected to play a crucial role in restoring confidence in India’s examination system.

The Supreme Court is likely to review the government’s affidavit at the next hearing and determine further steps based on the progress of the probe.
