West Bengal’s Special Task Force arrested Trinamool Congress MLA Dilip Mondal from Puri, Odisha, after he evaded police for several weeks.
The arrest followed complaints of threats against political rivals and came days after his son’s detention in a firearms case.
Police sources said Mondal had been on the run since allegations surfaced that he intimidated opponents. Investigators raided two properties linked to him in the Pailan area on May 14 as part of the probe. A joint team of West Bengal Police and Diamond Harbour district police carried out the operation late Sunday, leading to his capture.
The arrest came shortly after Mondal’s son, Arghya Mondal, and five others were held from the Bakkhali-Fraserganj area in South 24 Parganas on May 18 for allegedly possessing firearms. Officers seized two pistols and six mobile phones from the accused during the raid. Police alleged that Arghya threatened BJP workers and supporters in the region.
Investigators described Dilip Mondal as absconding and intensified efforts to trace him following multiple complaints of intimidation. His arrest marks a significant development in the ongoing crackdown on political violence in West Bengal.
