The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India’s apex standards body, has announced its Annual Programme for Standardisation (APS) for 2025-26.

This initiative will focus on formulating new standards and revising existing ones to enhance quality benchmarks across sectors.

The APS launch follows extensive stakeholder consultations held from March 5 to March 11, 2025, involving representatives from 40 ministries and 84 industry associations. BIS has also introduced a digital platform allowing stakeholders to propose and track the progress of standards, aimed at facilitating greater adoption of over 23,000 BIS standards.

Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, Director General of BIS, emphasized the importance of collaboration in his address. He urged stakeholders to actively contribute to the standardization process and nominate experts where necessary. “This initiative will ensure a strategic, need-based approach to standardization, prioritizing critical areas while promoting widespread adoption,” he stated.

Ahead of the APS preparations, BIS undertook a comprehensive mapping of standards against government missions and conducted focus group meetings between August 2024 and January 2025. The new APS is poised to drive seamless implementation of priority standards across India’s manufacturing and service sectors.
