More than 1.18 lakh undergraduate students across Odisha participated in internships and community service programmes during the academic year 2025–26.

The initiative followed the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines requiring internships in the fourth semester.

The Higher Education Department placed students in government offices, educational institutions, Anganwadi centres, Panchayat Samiti offices, health centres, financial institutions, private organisations and NGOs. The six‑week programme provided mentorship and practical exposure to grassroots‑level functioning.

Officials issued separate guidelines for the internship programme. Students earned academic credits based on attendance, weekly reports, presentations and performance. These credits were added to the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC). Certificates were awarded upon successful completion.

Districts such as Ganjam, Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Cuttack and Balangir recorded the highest participation. Departments including Panchayati Raj & Drinking Water, Women & Child Development, Health & Family Welfare, Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment, Higher Education and School & Mass Education hosted students.

Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj said the government prioritises quality and research‑oriented education. He explained that internships and community service help students understand administrative processes and practical applications of their curriculum. He added that exposure in government institutions, private industries and NGOs will prepare students for employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.
