Bhubaneswar Sweats Under Extreme Humidity As ‘Feels-Like’ Temperature Touches 44°C

Residents of Bhubaneswar are struggling with intense discomfort as soaring humidity and rising temperatures continue to grip the city, even during early morning hours.

At 5:30 am on Thursday, the city recorded a temperature of 31.4°C along with 84% relative humidity. According to calculations based on the NOAA heat index formula, the “feels-like” temperature surged to a blistering 44°C.

The unusually high heat index has made outdoor activities difficult even before sunrise, with residents reporting severe muggy conditions across the Odisha capital.

Heat Index Remains Dangerous For Four Consecutive Days

The oppressive weather has persisted over the last four days, with humidity levels consistently remaining above 84%.

Bhubaneswar Heat Index At 5:30 AM

  • May 22: 31.4°C | 84% humidity | Heat Index 44°C
  • May 21: 29.6°C | 90% humidity | Heat Index 39°C
  • May 20: 30.0°C | 88% humidity | Heat Index 40°C
  • May 19: 30.0°C | 86.5% humidity | Heat Index 40°C

The combination of high moisture in the atmosphere and elevated temperatures is severely affecting the body’s natural cooling process through sweating.

Why Bhubaneswar Feels Hotter Than Actual Temperature

Weather experts explain that high humidity traps heat close to the body, making temperatures feel significantly hotter than recorded readings.

With humidity ranging between 84% and 90%, sweat evaporates slowly, reducing the body’s ability to cool itself efficiently. This results in extreme discomfort, exhaustion and increased risk of heat-related illnesses.

The conditions are particularly dangerous for:

  • Elderly people
  • Children
  • Outdoor workers
  • Individuals with heart or respiratory illnesses

IMD Forecasts Continued Hot And Humid Weather

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Bhubaneswar and several coastal districts of Odisha are currently experiencing persistent hot and humid conditions.

Daytime maximum temperatures have crossed 42°C in some regions, further worsening the heat stress situation.

The weather department has forecast that the prevailing conditions are likely to continue over the coming days. While isolated thundershowers may occur in some districts, experts say they may not provide substantial relief from the humidity.

Health Advisory Issued For Residents

Authorities have advised people to:

  • Avoid outdoor activity during peak heat hours
  • Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated
  • Wear loose cotton clothing
  • Avoid direct sunlight whenever possible
  • Watch for symptoms of heat exhaustion and dehydration

With the heat index touching dangerous levels, residents are urged to remain cautious as Odisha continues to battle one of the season’s most uncomfortable weather spells.
