Jharsuguda Turns Into a Furnace: Odisha Battles Brutal Heatwave as IMD Warns of No Relief Till May 24

Jharsuguda is reeling under one of the harshest heatwaves of the season as soaring temperatures and warm nights continue to make life difficult across western Odisha. The industrial town has emerged as one of the hottest places in the state, with residents struggling to cope with the relentless heat and suffocating weather conditions.

The severe heat has disrupted daily life, forcing many people to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours. Roads and marketplaces are witnessing reduced movement as scorching winds and intense sunlight continue to dominate the region.

The ongoing heatwave has brought back memories of Jharsuguda’s record-breaking May temperatures over the decades. The town had previously recorded 48°C on May 28, 1998, 47.6°C on May 24, 1998, 47.5°C on May 20, 1978, and 47°C on May 31, 2024.

According to the India Meteorological Department, there is likely to be no major relief from the extreme weather conditions until May 24. The weather agency has issued a severe heatwave alert for districts including Sambalpur and Balangir from Thursday onward.

The IMD has also warned of unusually high night temperatures in areas such as Sundargarh, Sambalpur and Balangir, making conditions even more uncomfortable for residents as the heat continues even after sunset.

While coastal parts of Odisha are recording comparatively lower temperatures between 36°C and 38°C, humidity levels above 70 percent are making the weather feel close to 50°C. The combination of heat and humidity has created severe discomfort across several districts.

The Odisha government has advised people to avoid stepping outdoors between 11 am and 3 pm unless absolutely necessary. Citizens have also been urged to drink enough water, remain hydrated, and take extra care of children, elderly family members and individuals with health conditions.

With weather conditions showing no immediate signs of improvement, Odisha is expected to remain under the grip of an intense summer spell over the next few days.
