Uttar Pradesh will implement a two-day work-from-home policy for large institutions and industrial units while encouraging staggered shift timings to reduce fuel consumption and traffic congestion.
The labour department finalised the plan on Sunday, emphasising multiple shifts and greater reliance on public transport. Officials said the program will be rolled out in key hubs such as Noida, Ghaziabad, and Lucknow, where daily commuting adds significantly to fuel demand.
Government agencies must conduct half of their meetings, workshops, and seminars virtually. The State Secretariat and Directorates will adopt remote formats to minimise travel.
The campaign also promotes carpooling, metro services, UPSRTC buses, and electric vehicles. Earlier this week, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered ministerial convoy sizes cut by 50 per cent, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for austerity.
Modi, speaking in Hyderabad on May 10, urged citizens to reduce dependency on petrol and diesel. He highlighted the need to use metros, railways, and carpooling to ease pressure on foreign exchange reserves. He reminded the public that habits developed during the Covid era, such as virtual meetings and remote work, should be revived to meet current challenges.
