Just two days after taking oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, C Joseph Vijay has launched one of the biggest liquor control drives in the state by ordering the closure of 717 government-run TASMAC liquor shops located near schools, temples, and bus stands.

The decision marks one of the first major administrative actions by the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government and signals Vijay’s push to fulfil his election promise of creating a safer and drug-free Tamil Nadu.

717 TASMAC Shops to Shut Within Two Weeks

According to an official government statement, the Chief Minister directed state authorities to inspect liquor shops operating within a 500-metre radius of educational institutions, places of worship, and bus stations.

Following the inspection, officials identified 717 TASMAC outlets violating the prescribed distance norms. Vijay has now instructed authorities to shut all these shops within the next two weeks.

Out of the total liquor outlets marked for closure:

  • 276 shops were located near religious places
  • 186 shops operated close to educational institutions
  • 255 shops were situated near bus stands

The move is being viewed as a significant policy shift under the new government.

Tamil Nadu Has Over 4,700 TASMAC Stores

At present, the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) operates nearly 4,765 liquor retail shops across the state. TASMAC remains one of the largest sources of revenue for the Tamil Nadu government.

However, concerns over alcohol accessibility near schools, public transport hubs, and residential areas have been raised for years by parents, social activists, women’s groups, and community organisations.

The latest action by the Vijay-led government is expected to receive support from several sections of society advocating stricter liquor regulations.

Vijay Pushes ‘Drug-Free Tamil Nadu’ Agenda

During the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Election campaign, Vijay repeatedly promised stronger measures against drug abuse and alcohol-related social issues. The TVK manifesto highlighted youth safety, women’s security, and public welfare as key priorities.

By acting immediately after assuming office, Vijay appears determined to demonstrate swift governance and visible administrative action.

Political observers say the decision could strengthen his public image as a leader focused on social reform and public health.

Public Reaction and Political Impact

The announcement has already generated widespread discussion across social media platforms, with many users praising the government’s quick response. Supporters of the move argue that liquor outlets near schools and public places negatively affect community safety and youth welfare.

At the same time, some analysts believe the closures could impact state revenue collections, as TASMAC contributes significantly to Tamil Nadu’s finances.

Despite the possible financial implications, the Vijay government appears committed to balancing revenue generation with social responsibility and public concerns.

A Defining Early Decision for the Vijay Government

The closure of 717 TASMAC outlets is being seen as one of the defining early decisions of Vijay’s tenure as Chief Minister. With more policy announcements expected in the coming weeks, attention will remain on how the new administration implements its promises on governance, public safety, and welfare reforms.

The move has also intensified political conversations around liquor regulation policies in Tamil Nadu and may influence future debates on alcohol control measures across India.
