A shocking incident of mob justice unfolded in Mayurbhanj district when villagers tied a young man to a tree and thrashed him after accusing him of misbehaving with two girls.
The incident occurred in Barahampur village under Udala police station limits. Reports stated that two youths from Baripada entered the village late at night while a programme was underway at a local Adivasi family’s house. The duo allegedly harassed two girls present there. Enraged villagers caught hold of one youth while the other managed to escape.
In a fit of anger, the mob tied the youth to a tree with a rope and beat him severely. Police reached the spot after receiving information and rescued the injured youth. He was shifted to a hospital for treatment.
The rescued youth claimed that he had come to the village searching for his wife and mistakenly caught hold of another girl in confusion. His statement added another layer of complexity to the case.
Authorities have begun an investigation to establish the facts. Details regarding the identity of the accused and the girls remain awaited. The incident has sparked concern about rising cases of mob justice in rural Odisha, where villagers often take the law into their own hands.
