Actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is poised to form the government in Tamil Nadu after emerging as the single largest party in the 2026 Assembly elections.
Sources confirmed that Vijay will meet Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at 6 p.m. today to stake claim.
TVK secured 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, falling short of the majority mark. However, the party gained crucial support from the DMK-led alliance, which won 73 seats, including five Congress seats. In addition, three Left parties—the CPI, CPI(M), and VCK—extended support to TVK, strengthening its position ahead of government formation.
TVK Joint General Secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar visited Balan Illam, the CPI headquarters in Chennai, on May 8 to consolidate support. The dramatic realignment of alliances has reshaped Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, paving the way for Vijay’s debut as Chief Minister.
Vijay, a popular actor with a massive fan following, launched TVK as a regional force promising governance reforms and youth empowerment. His rise marks a significant shift in Tamil Nadu politics, traditionally dominated by DMK and AIADMK.
The Governor’s meeting will be a decisive step in formalising TVK’s claim to power, backed by coalition partners.
