A contract worker lost his life after falling from a height of nearly 30 feet inside the Rourkela Steel Plant on Saturday, raising serious concerns about workplace safety and operational protocols within the facility.

The deceased has been identified as Prakash Swain. Following the incident, his body was shifted to the IG Hospital morgue, where a post-mortem examination is scheduled. Family members were reportedly en route to the hospital at the time of reporting.

Investigation Underway into Circumstances of Fall

An internal investigation has been initiated by the plant authorities to determine the exact cause of the fatal accident. While such probes are standard in cases of industrial mishaps, several questions remain unanswered—particularly how the worker fell from such a significant height within a controlled industrial environment.

Officials have yet to issue a formal statement regarding the incident.

Questions Raised Over Safety Measures and Supervision

The tragic incident has sparked widespread concern about whether adequate safety protocols were in place. Key issues being examined include:

  • Whether the worker was properly trained for the assigned task
  • Availability and usage of safety equipment
  • Level of supervision at the worksite

The lack of clarity has intensified scrutiny of safety standards at one of Odisha’s largest industrial units.

Compensation Demand and Worker Welfare Concerns

In response to the incident, the RSP employee committee has demanded:

  • Employment for a family member of the deceased
  • Ex-gratia compensation exceeding ₹10 lakh

Sources indicate that similar incidents have occurred in the past, further amplifying concerns over worker safety and enforcement of regulations.

Growing Focus on Industrial Safety in Odisha

This incident adds to a series of workplace accidents reported across industrial zones in Odisha, underlining the urgent need for stricter compliance with safety norms and better monitoring mechanisms to protect workers.
