Record Rs 510 Crore Haul! West Bengal’s Poll Crackdown Shatters 2021 Record

West Bengal election seizures 2026

In a stunning display of zero-tolerance enforcement, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has seized illicit inducements worth a jaw-dropping Rs 510.10 crore in West Bengal alone – the highest ever recorded in the state ahead of any assembly polls.

The bombshell figures, released today via an official press note, cover the period since the Election Seizure Management System (ESMS) was activated on February 26, 2026, right up to April 27. This massive haul comfortably surpasses the Rs 339 crore seized during the 2021 General Elections to Legislative Assemblies (GELA) in West Bengal, signalling that the ECI is playing an even harder game this time.

The crackdown is part of a meticulously planned operation triggered after the ECI announced the poll schedule on March 15, 2026, for West Bengal and four other states/UTs. Determined to deliver “violence-free, intimidation-free and inducement-free” elections, the Commission has flooded the state with enforcement muscle: **over 2,728 Flying Squad Teams (FSTs)** that rush to complaints within 100 minutes and **3,142 Static Surveillance Teams (SSTs)** manning surprise nakas across highways and by-lanes. Special drives targeting illicit liquor manufacturing, storage and distribution are also in full swing.

Here’s the staggering breakdown from West Bengal:

  • Cash – Rs 30.00 crore
  • Liquor – 48,46,183 litres valued at Rs 126.85 crore
  • Drugs – Rs 110.12 crore
  • Precious Metals – Rs 58.28 crore
  • Freebies / Other Items – Rs 184.85 crore

Total: Rs 510.10 crore

The sheer volume of liquor – nearly 48.5 lakh litres – alone could fill hundreds of tanker trucks, while the drugs and precious metals haul points to sophisticated networks trying to buy influence. Freebies and “other” items worth Rs 184.85 crore suggest attempts at indirect voter inducement were also being stamped out aggressively.

Deputy Director P. Pawan, who issued the press note, emphasised that these seizures are the direct result of relentless coordination between the ECI, state authorities, bordering states, and enforcement agencies.

With the Model Code of Conduct in full force and the eyes of the nation on West Bengal, today’s announcement sends a crystal-clear message: money power and muscle power will not decide the fate of these elections. As polling draws closer, the ECI’s aggressive pre-emptive strikes are ensuring that the real power remains where it belongs – with the voter.

Democracy just got a very expensive reality check in West Bengal.
