The long-forgotten ‘slapgate’ controversy from the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League has resurfaced, with former India pacer S Sreesanth announcing that he has cut all ties with Harbhajan Singh.
In a recent interview, Sreesanth alleged that Harbhajan profited from the controversial incident through a commercial advertisement, reportedly earning between ₹80 lakh and ₹1 crore. The development has reignited tensions between the two cricketers, years after they appeared to have reconciled.
Sreesanth’s Allegations
Sreesanth expressed disappointment over what he described as the commercialisation of a painful chapter in his career. He stated that although he had forgiven Harbhajan in the past, the recent advertisement using the incident for entertainment did not sit well with him.
He also revealed that Harbhajan had asked him to share the promotional content on social media, which he declined.
“I can forgive, but I will never forget,” Sreesanth said, emphasising his stance on the matter.
Cuts All Personal Ties
The former World Cup-winning pacer confirmed that he has completely distanced himself from Harbhajan Singh.
According to Sreesanth, he has:
- Ended all personal communication
- Blocked Harbhajan on Instagram
- Chosen to move forward without any association
He added that while he holds no active grievances, he no longer wishes to maintain any relationship.
Background: What Was the ‘Slapgate’ Controversy?
The incident dates back to the 2008 season of the IPL, during a match between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). Harbhajan Singh was seen slapping Sreesanth on the field, leading to one of the biggest controversies in the league’s history.
Key developments at the time included:
- Harbhajan Singh being banned for the remainder of the season
- Visuals of Sreesanth visibly emotional on the field
- Widespread debate on player conduct and discipline
In later years, Harbhajan publicly acknowledged his mistake and issued an apology.
Renewed Tensions After Advertisement
The controversy has resurfaced following a recent advertisement that reportedly recreated the incident for comic effect. Sreesanth believes the move undermines the seriousness of what happened.
He also questioned the authenticity of Harbhajan’s public persona, stating that while others may view him positively, his personal experience has been different.
