The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly directed the national team to prioritise Test cricket, with fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah expected to feature in all remaining matches of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
According to reports, this strategic shift comes amid India’s underwhelming performance in the current WTC standings, where the team is placed sixth. The move signals a renewed focus on restoring India’s dominance in the longest format.
Bumrah Central to India’s Test Plans
Bumrah is likely to participate in key upcoming Test assignments, including:
- Two Tests in New Zealand
- A five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia
To manage his workload, selectors are reportedly willing to rest him from select ODI series, despite the ICC Cricket World Cup being just over a year away.
A BCCI source indicated that maintaining Bumrah’s fitness across the extended Test schedule will be a priority, especially with a packed calendar ahead.
Balancing Workload and Performance
Bumrah’s fitness has been a recurring concern due to his injury history. He previously missed key tournaments, including the Champions Trophy, after an intense Test schedule.
While India had earlier adopted a rotation policy—resting Bumrah during parts of overseas tours—this approach may now take a backseat as the team looks to maximise his impact in Tests.
India’s Test Struggles Prompt Shift
India’s recent Test record has raised concerns, including:
- A 0-3 home series loss to New Zealand national cricket team in 2024
- A 0-2 defeat against South Africa national cricket team in 2025
These setbacks have highlighted a significant dip in performance, particularly in conditions where India once held a strong advantage.
Upcoming Test Schedule
India’s immediate red-ball fixtures include:
- A one-off Test against Afghanistan national cricket team (June, New Chandigarh)
- A Test series in Sri Lanka
- An away tour of New Zealand
- The high-profile Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home
Though the Afghanistan Test falls outside the WTC cycle, it is expected to serve as crucial preparation for the demanding season ahead.
Strategic Reset Underway
The directive reflects a broader intent to rebuild India’s Test credentials under the current leadership setup, with experienced players like Bumrah expected to play a pivotal role.
With challenging overseas tours and marquee home series lined up, India’s renewed emphasis on Test cricket could define its trajectory in the ongoing WTC cycle
