Authorities in Odisha extended school and college holidays in Kalahandi and Sambalpur districts as the heatwave continues to grip the state.
In Kalahandi, the district administration announced that schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centres will remain closed from April 22 until further notice. Officials confirmed that examinations for Classes 5 and 8 will continue in the morning between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. to minimise exposure to extreme heat.
Similarly, Sambalpur district extended holidays for schools until April 24. The district collector issued the directive, citing rising temperatures and the need to safeguard students.
The prolonged heatwave has disrupted academic schedules across western Odisha. Several districts already declared closures earlier this week, and the latest extensions reflect worsening conditions. Parents and teachers welcomed the decision, stressing the importance of protecting children from heat-related illnesses.
Meteorologists predicted that temperatures will remain high until April 25, with no immediate relief expected. Jharsuguda, Titilagarh, and Balangir recorded temperatures above 42°C, while other districts hovered around 40°C.
The state government urged residents to avoid outdoor activities during peak hours and stay hydrated. Officials assured that examinations and academic activities will be rescheduled once conditions improve.
