The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has penalised Ruturaj Gaikwad and Nitish Rana for separate breaches of the IPL Code of Conduct during the IPL 2026 season.

The penalties came after Chennai Super Kings (CSK) secured their first win of the season against Delhi Capitals (DC) at Chepauk.

Ruturaj Gaikwad Fined for Slow Over-Rate

Gaikwad, captain of Chennai Super Kings, was fined ₹12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during the match. This was the team’s first offence under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct.

The rule relates to minimum over-rate requirements, which are strictly enforced to ensure timely completion of matches. Despite the victory, the violation resulted in a financial penalty.

Multiple Over-Rate Offences This Season

IPL 2026 has already seen several similar cases. Shreyas Iyer was penalised twice earlier in the season for slow over-rates, including a ₹24 lakh fine for a second offence.

Shubman Gill was also fined for a similar breach during a match against Delhi Capitals.

Nitish Rana Penalised for Code of Conduct Breach

In a separate incident, Delhi Capitals batter Nitish Rana was fined 25% of his match fee and given one demerit point.

He was found guilty of violating Article 2.3 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which relates to the use of inappropriate language during a match. The incident occurred after a disagreement with an umpire regarding a request to change gloves in the final overs.

Rana admitted the offence and accepted the match referee’s decision.

CSK Registers First Win of the Season

Chennai Super Kings secured a 23-run victory over Delhi Capitals, marking their first win in IPL 2026. The team posted a strong total of 212/2, supported by a standout batting performance.

Delhi Capitals were later bowled out for 189, giving CSK a much-needed boost in the tournament standings.

Why These Penalties Matter

The IPL Code of Conduct ensures discipline, fairness, and professionalism across matches. Actions such as slow over-rates and on-field misconduct are monitored closely to maintain the integrity of the game.

Consistent enforcement of rules helps uphold the credibility of the tournament.
