Odisha: Temperatures to Hit 43°C This Week | IMD Issues Thunderstorm Alerts

Temperatures to touch 43°C this week as pre-monsoon Kalbaisakhi activity brings rain, hail and gusty winds to Odisha

Day temperatures in Odisha are expected to climb as high as 43 degrees Celsius in the coming days, even as a trough line extending from Uttar Pradesh to Odisha brings mixed weather with thunderstorms and rain in several parts of the state.

The Regional Meteorological Centre Director Manorama Mohanty said the weather pattern is likely to remain largely unchanged this week. While pre-monsoon Kal Baisakhi activity will continue till April 3, there will be no significant drop in daytime temperatures.

On Monday, temperatures soared in western and southern districts. Titlagarh recorded the highest at 41.8°C, followed by Jharsuguda at 40.5°C, and Bhawanipatna and Balangir at 40.2°C. Several other places crossed 38-40°C.

Due to the prevailing weather system — a trough line at 0.9 km above mean sea level along with an upper air cyclonic circulation over northwest Uttar Pradesh — many districts are experiencing cloudy skies, rain, lightning, and gusty winds. This has kept daytime temperatures below normal in several areas.

**Warnings Issued:**
– On Tuesday, an Orange alert has been issued for 4 districts for hail, thunder, lightning, and strong winds (50-60 kmph).
– A Yellow alert has been issued for 17 districts for thunderstorms, lightning, and winds of 30-40 kmph.

Similar warnings are in place for April 2 and 3. On Wednesday, the intensity of Kal Baisakhi is expected to slightly decrease, but alerts remain for coastal and other districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Kendujhar, Malkangiri, Koraput, and Rayagada.

From April 4 onwards, rainfall activity is likely to decrease, but daytime temperatures are not expected to fall significantly during the week.

Mohanty has urged people to take necessary precautions against both the heat and sudden severe weather.
