In a swift operation, Laxmisagar Police foiled a major armed dacoity attempt on a jewellery store late Friday night and arrested four members of the notorious ‘Eagle Gang’.
Acting on specific intelligence, a police team raided an open field near Joka Pokhari on Canal Road under Laxmisagar Police Station limits around 11:50 PM. The accused were allegedly finalising plans to carry out an armed robbery at Mahavir Jewelers located on Jagannath Nagar Main Road.
Upon spotting the police, the gang members brandished weapons, including swords, in an attempt to intimidate and flee. However, the police chased them and managed to nab four suspects. One accomplice escaped under the cover of darkness.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Kahna Lenka, Omshree Sai Ashirbad alias Rampal, Baliya alias Balram Bhai, and Suman alias Bishwamohan Nayak. They were produced in court following their arrest in connection with Case No. 175.
During interrogation, the accused confessed to assembling at the spot with various weapons to execute the robbery plan. Police seized a significant cache of items from the spot, including two iron rods, a screwdriver, a hacksaw blade, a knife, a hammer, two swords (khanda), two packets of chili powder, an empty liquor bottle, plastic glasses, a cigarette packet with cigarettes, a matchbox, a torch light, and four black monkey caps.
The ‘Eagle Gang’ is reportedly known for creating terror in the locality. Police sources revealed that the arrested persons have prior criminal cases registered against them at various police stations.
The search for the fifth accused is underway, and further investigation into the matter is continuing.
This proactive action by Laxmisagar Police has prevented what could have been a major crime in the city.
