The U.S. military will deploy at least 1,000 troops from the 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East in the coming days, sources confirmed.
The move comes amid escalating tensions in the region and forms part of a broader reinforcement strategy.
The deployment includes a battalion from the 1st Brigade Combat Team, along with Major General Brandon Tegtmeier and division staff. The 82nd Airborne, based at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, specialises in rapid deployment to secure critical areas and airfields in hostile environments.
Officials said the decision follows the announcement of additional Marine units heading to the region. Thousands of Marines aboard Navy ships, including the USS Tripoli and the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, are also moving to the Middle East. Together, these deployments will add to the existing 50,000 U.S. troops already stationed in the region.
White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly referred questions to the Pentagon but emphasised that President Trump retains all military options. On Capitol Hill, members of the Senate Armed Services Committee are scheduled to receive a classified briefing from Pentagon officials, with the troop deployment expected to be a key focus.
The reinforcement coincides with claims by the Trump administration of ongoing negotiations with Iran. Iranian officials, however, denied direct talks, adding complexity to the diplomatic situation.
