Narendra Modi and Donald Trump held a crucial phone conversation on Tuesday to discuss the escalating crisis in West Asia, with a strong focus on maintaining stability in global energy supply chains.

This marks their first discussion since the conflict triggered by military strikes involving the US and Israel on Iran on February 28.

India Calls for Peace and Stability

During the conversation, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s consistent position advocating de-escalation and an early restoration of peace.

He emphasised that keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, secure, and accessible is vital not only for India but for the global community, given its critical role in transporting oil, gas, and essential commodities.

Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact as diplomatic efforts continue to stabilise the region.

Global Concerns Over Energy and Supply Chains

The ongoing conflict has raised serious concerns about disruptions to fuel, fertiliser, and food supply chains worldwide. The partial blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has already impacted the movement of crude oil and other key resources.

India has intensified diplomatic outreach to multiple stakeholders, including Iran, Israel, and Gulf nations, to support efforts aimed at ending hostilities and ensuring uninterrupted trade routes.

India’s Diplomatic Outreach Intensifies

In recent days, India has engaged with leaders across West Asia and the Gulf region. Discussions have included key nations such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and other members of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has also held multiple high-level meetings with international counterparts, reinforcing India’s commitment to dialogue and regional stability.

Focus on Economic and Security Impact

The Indian government remains alert to the broader implications of the conflict, particularly its impact on energy security and inflation. Officials have warned that prolonged disruptions could trigger global fuel price volatility and affect food security, especially in vulnerable regions.

At the same time, India has maintained that it will not directly intervene in the conflict, instead focusing on safeguarding its national interests and maritime trade routes.

Naval Operations Ensure Maritime Safety

India’s naval initiative, Operation Sankalp, continues to ensure the safety of Indian-flagged vessels operating in the Persian Gulf and surrounding regions. The mission is aimed at protecting sea lanes and ensuring smooth commercial shipping despite ongoing tensions.
