Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has taken a bold step in the ongoing language row with the central government by dropping the official rupee symbol in the state budget for 2025-26.
Instead, the budget features the Tamil letter for ‘ru’ from ‘rubai’ (rupees in Tamil). This move was announced on X, with Stalin emphasizing the development of Tamil Nadu.
In previous years, the state budget logos prominently displayed the rupee symbol, inspired by the Hindi alphabet. However, this is the first time a state has rejected the national currency symbol. The decision comes amidst the Tamil Nadu government’s resistance against the National Education Policy (NEP) and the three-language formula.
The announcement marks a significant escalation in the language row and highlights the state’s commitment to promoting Tamil language and culture.
