In a move reflecting the volatile global energy market, IndiGo, India’s premier low-cost carrier, has announced the introduction of a ‘Fuel Charge’ on all domestic and international flights effective from 00:01 hours on March 14, 2026.
This decision comes in direct response to an unprecedented surge in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Jet Fuel Monitor, fuel prices in the region have skyrocketed by over 85% in recent months. ATF constitutes a major portion of airlines’ operating expenses, and this sharp increase is poised to strain budgets across the industry. IndiGo, known for its commitment to affordable travel, stated that while a full fare hike could offset the costs, the airline opted for a more modest fuel surcharge to minimise the impact on passengers.
The new charges, applied per sector for all fresh bookings from the effective date, vary by route:
- Domestic flights within India: ₹425
- Routes in the Indian Subcontinent: ₹425
- Middle East destinations: ₹900
- South East Asia and China: ₹1,800
- Africa and West Asia: ₹1,800
- Europe: ₹2,300
IndiGo expressed regret over the added burden on travellers, emphasising that the surcharge is a temporary measure necessitated by external factors. The airline will closely monitor fuel price trends and adjust accordingly. Despite the challenges, IndiGo reaffirmed its dedication to providing reliable, on-time service and expanding access to air travel for millions.
As India’s fastest-growing airline, IndiGo operates a fleet of over 400 aircraft, serving more than 95 domestic and 40 international destinations with around 2,200 daily flights. In 2025, it carried 124 million passengers and earned accolades, including ‘Best Airline in India and South Asia’ from Skytrax and sixth place for punctuality in Asia-Pacific by Cirium.
This development underscores broader industry pressures, as other carriers may follow suit amid persistent supply disruptions. Travellers are advised to check updated fares when booking.
