The Government of India continues to strengthen public broadcasting infrastructure in Odisha, with 28 operational All India Radio (Akashvani) centres and the dedicated 24-hour DD Odia television channel ensuring widespread access to information, education, and entertainment in the Odia language.

Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Dr. L. Murugan, shared these details in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on March 13, highlighting Prasar Bharati’s extensive network in the state. Of the 28 Akashvani centres, 12 are located in Aspirational Districts, addressing connectivity in underserved and remote areas.

Under the Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development (BIND) scheme, approval has been granted for 6 FM transmitters in Odisha, including one specifically for the Aspirational District of Kalahandi. This initiative aims to enhance FM radio coverage, particularly in priority regions.

DD Odia operates as a round-the-clock channel, available free-to-air via DD Free Dish (DTH) services. Its signal reaches not only across Odisha—including Aspirational Districts—but also nationwide, making regional content accessible to Odia-speaking audiences everywhere.

Prasar Bharati has embraced digital expansion, launching the multi-platform OTT streaming service “Waves” in 2024. This aggregator delivers infotainment content focused on information, education, and culture. Various Doordarshan and Akashvani channels are integrated with Waves, while listeners can access over 260 Akashvani channels via the mobile app “News on Air”.

These efforts underscore the government’s commitment to modernising broadcasting, bridging digital divides, and promoting inclusive communication in regional languages.
