Bharatpur forest fire Bhubaneswar

The Bharatpur forest, located on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar near areas like Kalinga Studio Square, experienced a significant fire on Thursday afternoon (March 12, 2026).

Wild animals, including peacocks, deer, monkeys, birds, and smaller creatures, were seen fleeing in panic amid the blaze and thick smoke.

The Forest Department initially struggled to contain the fire but was supported by Odisha Fire Services teams, who arrived with multiple fire engines. Using water jets and modern equipment, they successfully extinguished the flames, with forest staff providing assistance. No human casualties or major wildlife losses have been reported so far.

Dense smoke engulfed a large portion of the forest, alarming nearby residents. The area is ecologically vital for the capital’s environment, heightening concerns. Dry weather, high temperatures, and wind gusts increased the risk of spread, though the fire was brought under control.

The cause remains under investigation by the Forest Department, amid a surge in wildfires across Odisha due to prevailing heat and dryness this March. Locals suspect intentional arson linked to repeated illegal dumping of meat waste by vendors near Kalinga Studio Square, which creates foul odours. Residents demand CCTV installation to catch culprits and curb such activities.

This marks the second major fire incident in the Bharatpur area recently, following the Tarini Market blaze. Cooperation between locals and forest officials is credited for the quick response.
