Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan directed West Bengal Chief Secretary to submit a detailed report by 5:00 pm today on alleged protocol lapses during President Droupadi Murmu’s Darjeeling visit.

President’s Remarks

At the International Santal Council event, President Murmu expressed disappointment over the venue’s remote location, which prevented many locals from attending. Moreover, she highlighted the absence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her ministers. Adding a personal touch, she remarked that Banerjee is her “younger sister.”

Political Reactions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as “shameful and unprecedented.” Furthermore, Home Minister Amit Shah accused the Trinamool Congress of humiliating the highest office. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman added that Murmu’s remarks were “rare and painful.” Several BJP leaders reinforced claims of deliberate disrespect, intensifying the political storm.

TMC’s Response

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly denied protocol breaches. She emphasised that the event was privately organised and her office was not formally invited. Additionally, she accused the BJP of politicising the issue and pointed to Bengal’s tribal welfare initiatives. TMC leaders framed the controversy as an attempt to malign the state government.

Opposition Views

Congress leader Udit Raj questioned repeated snubs to President Murmu, citing past instances where she was overlooked at national events. Consequently, the row now awaits the mandated report, which will determine whether lapses occurred and how responsibility will be fixed.
