Renowned Santhali author and cultural activist Charan Hembram from Odisha will be conferred with the Padma Shri 2026 in the field of Literature and Education, according to reports confirmed on January 25, 2026.

He has been recognised under the “unsung heroes” category for his sustained efforts to preserve and promote the Santhali language and tribal heritage over the past three decades.

Hembram’s work has played a crucial role in strengthening indigenous literature and ensuring wider recognition for Santhali language and culture at the national level.

Key Contributions

Literary Legacy

Often described as a “sentinel of the Santhali language,” Charan Hembram has authored numerous books, plays, and songs in Santhali, helping elevate the language’s literary status and visibility. His writings reflect tribal life, oral traditions, and social realities.

Cultural Preservation and Education

Beyond literature, Hembram has founded multiple institutions dedicated to tribal cultural education. He has also actively promoted indigenous dance forms, particularly encouraging participation among women, contributing to cultural continuity and empowerment.

Previous National Recognition

In 2019, Hembram received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his acclaimed anthology of short stories titled Sisirjali, further cementing his contribution to Indian regional literature.

Other Padma Shri 2026 Awardees From Odisha

Charan Hembram is among at least three individuals from Odisha honoured in the Padma Shri 2026 “unsung heroes” category. Other awardees include:

  • Mahendra Kumar Mishra, eminent linguist and folklorist, recognised for documenting tribal myths, epics, and oral traditions.

  • Simanchal Patro, a noted “Sakhi Nata” theatre artist, honoured for his lifelong contribution to folk theatre and performing arts.

The recognition of these individuals highlights the rich cultural and linguistic diversity of Odisha and acknowledges efforts to preserve indigenous knowledge systems and art forms.
