A horrifying incident unfolded in Damarpur village under Pattamundai Rural police limits in Kendrapara district, where a man allegedly tried to burn his daughter-in-law alive for giving birth to a baby girl.
Reports state that the woman, identified as Sasmita Das, was sleeping when her father-in-law allegedly brought petrol from a nearby market. He poured it on her bed and set it ablaze, intending to kill both her and her newborn daughter.
Sasmita and the infant narrowly escaped the flames. As the fire spread rapidly, she fled the house and reportedly spent the entire night outside to protect herself and her child. Household items inside the home were completely destroyed.
Married eight years ago to Sushant Ray, Sasmita had been facing harassment after giving birth to a girl child. She alleged that her husband, father-in-law, and mother-in-law repeatedly tortured her physically and mentally for not bearing a male child.
Police have begun investigating the case. Authorities confirmed that further action will be taken based on the complaint and evidence collected.
