A mutilated body was recovered from the Hirli River under Larambha police limits on Sunday, sparking panic in the area.
Police suspect the remains belong to 12-year-old Ghanshyam Bariha of Kadopani village, who had been missing since January 2.
According to reports, villagers first noticed a severed leg floating in the river while going for morning chores. They immediately informed the Larambha police, who reached the spot and began an investigation. Later, decomposed bones were also recovered from the riverbed.
The body has been seized and sent for post-mortem examination, while forensic experts (DFSL) have started preliminary analysis. Police confirmed that Ghanshyam’s family had lodged a missing persons complaint earlier this month, but no trace was found until now.
Local sources suggest the boy may have suffocated after being buried in sand while playing, though police have not ruled out foul play. Patnagarh SDPO Sadanand Pujari stated that a detailed investigation is underway to establish the exact cause of death.
