A disturbing incident in Balasore district has triggered widespread outrage after a video showed a youth being brutally assaulted and tied with ropes.
The footage quickly went viral on social media, drawing condemnation from across the state.
The assault took place in Telgadia village under the Sadar police limits. Locals dragged the victim, Debashish Hati, for nearly two kilometres before dumping him in front of the Fandi outpost. Reports indicated that the attack stemmed from a land dispute. Moreover, witnesses said several individuals beat him mercilessly and tied him with ropes, while his wife, Shefali, tried desperately to intervene but failed.
As a result of the assault, Debashish sustained serious injuries. Doctors admitted him to the surgery ward of Balasore District Headquarters Hospital, where his condition remains critical.
Meanwhile, the incident sparked sharp reactions from the public. Citizens questioned why police remained silent for two days, even though the accused continued to move freely in the area. The brutality of the assault, captured on video, has been condemned as inhuman and unacceptable.
Subsequently, police registered Case No. 574/25 at Sadar police station after the victim’s wife lodged a complaint. However, officers have not yet arrested the accused.
Furthermore, Additional SP Debjyoti Dash confirmed that an investigation is underway. He assured that strict action will be taken against those responsible and emphasised that no one will be allowed to take the law into their own hands.
Finally, the incident has reignited concerns about vigilante behaviour in Balasore. Authorities now face mounting pressure to act swiftly, restore public confidence, and ensure justice for the victim.
