Odisha seized 124 kg 992 grams of brown sugar over the last four years, Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan informed the Legislative Assembly in a written reply.
Moreover, the state registered 1,426 cases and arrested 1,522 accused during this period.
In the current year alone, authorities confiscated 29 kg of brown sugar and arrested 331 individuals linked to narcotics trafficking. Consequently, the figures demonstrated the state’s intensified crackdown on drug networks operating across districts.
Over the past five years, enforcement agencies seized 1,66,941 kg of ganja (cannabis), marking a significant milestone in Odisha’s anti-drug operations. In addition, the minister reported that 52,235 acres of illegal ganja cultivation were destroyed during this period.
As of November this year, officials seized 22,380 kg of ganja, continuing the momentum of targeted raids and surveillance. Kandhamal district accounted for 3,649 acres of destroyed ganja plantations, while Boudh district reported 337 acres cleared.
Furthermore, Minister Harichandan emphasised that the government remains committed to curbing the narcotics trade and cultivation. He assured that coordinated efforts between the excise, police, and intelligence units will continue to dismantle drug supply chains and prevent illegal farming.
Finally, the Assembly data highlighted both the scale of Odisha’s drug enforcement efforts and the challenges posed by organised networks. Lawmakers urged the government to strengthen rehabilitation programs and community awareness to complement enforcement.
