Khariar police discovered the body of an unidentified youth near Chalanpada Bridge in Nuapada district on Friday night.
Officers seized the body and began an investigation into the circumstances of his death.
Police sources said the deceased youth, around 25 years old, had wandered in the Khariar area for several months. Locals noticed his unstable behaviour and often saw him roaming near the bridge. The youth collapsed near the bridge late Thursday night and died at the spot.
Khariar police reached the location after receiving information. They recovered the body and took it to the Khariar Sub-Divisional Hospital. Doctors declared him dead. Police registered case number 33/25 and started a formal inquiry.
The youth’s identity remains unknown. Investigators conducted a post-mortem examination and placed the body in the hospital freezer. Authorities announced that they will wait for 72 hours for family members or relatives to claim the remains.
Khariar police confirmed that if no one comes forward within the given time, the administration will perform the final rites. Station Officer Dilip Sahu stated that the department has taken all necessary steps to preserve the body and follow procedure.
Locals expressed concern after recalling that the youth had been seen wandering in the area for weeks. Police appealed to the public for any information that could help establish his identity.
