Literature serves as a transformative force that not only shapes life and values but also nurtures empathy and expands moral imagination, stated Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati.

Speaking at the inauguration of the third edition of the SOA Literary Festival on Saturday at the second campus of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA) University in Bhubaneswar, the Governor highlighted literature’s profound impact on society.

In his address, Dr. Kambhampati noted that before the advent of formal education systems, societies imbibed core values such as truth, justice, courage, and compassion through stories, poems, and epics. He emphasized that literature provides guidance to view the world from perspectives beyond our own, fostering a deeper understanding of diverse experiences.

Shedding light on the emotive and moral power of the written word, the Governor described literature as a source of strength during times of crisis and a mirror for society amid change. It consistently questions injustice, brings inequality into focus, and challenges outdated norms, he said, adding that the stories we read fundamentally shape the values by which we live.

Referring to the evolving technological landscape, Dr. Kambhampati praised the festival’s theme—”Culture, Creativity and Artificial Intelligence”—as timely and relevant. He observed that technology is rapidly transforming communication and creativity, underscoring the importance of preserving cultural identity and human values at their core. While artificial intelligence can offer speed and accuracy, it is culture that provides direction and purpose to creativity, the Governor asserted.

Expressing delight in participating in the event, which featured writers, poets, scholars, and artists from across the country, Dr. Kambhampati extended congratulations to veteran poet, lyricist, and scriptwriter Padma Bhushan Javed Akhtar, who was honored with the SOA Literary Award 2025.

In his brief acceptance speech, Javed Akhtar expressed feeling deeply honored by the recognition. He urged the younger generation to engage more profoundly with literature, language, culture, and traditions, noting that deeper exploration enriches knowledge. Akhtar also commended the significant participation of youth in the literary festival.

Among other dignitaries who addressed the gathering were former Secretary of Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, Dr. K. Srinivas Rao; SOA Vice-Chancellor Prof. Pradipta Kumar Nanda; and SOA Vice President Smt. Saswati Das. Festival Director Prof. Gayatri Bala Panda delivered the welcome address, while SOA Dean and chief coordinator Prof. Jyoti Ranjan Das proposed the vote of thanks.
