Rahul Gandhi Urges Parliament Debate and National Action Plan Amid Hazardous Air Pollution in North India

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi strongly criticised the central government for failing to tackle worsening air quality across North India. He highlighted the growing health risks for children and described the situation as a “health emergency.”

In his social media post, Gandhi emphasised that families feel “exhausted, scared, and angry” as pollution levels repeatedly reach hazardous levels. He added, “Every mother I meet tells me the same thing: her child is growing up breathing toxic air.”

Furthermore, Gandhi urged the government to convene an immediate parliamentary debate on air pollution. He demanded a strict, enforceable national action plan, stressing that clean air is a basic right of every child. He declared, “Modi ji, India’s children are choking in front of us. How can you stay silent? Why does your government show no urgency, no plan, no accountability?”

At the same time, Gandhi shared a video discussion with concerned parents to underline the urgency of the issue. His remarks come as the air quality index (AQI) across Delhi‑NCR and other North Indian cities consistently reaches severe levels, sparking widespread concern among residents and health experts.

Moreover, experts warn that prolonged exposure to toxic air can cause severe health problems, especially for children and those with pre‑existing conditions. Apollo Hospital cardiologists previously highlighted risks for children born with heart defects and recommended protective measures for families living in polluted areas.

Ultimately, Gandhi’s statement underscores rising public frustration over the lack of timely government intervention. His call for immediate debate and policy action reflects the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address India’s escalating air pollution crisis.
