The Special Judge, Vigilance, Bhawanipatna, today convicted Ajit Kumar Mishra, Former Junior Accountant (Retired), Office of SDO, Electrical Sub-Division, Bhawanipatna, District Kalahandi.
Odisha Vigilance had charge-sheeted Mishra in Koraput Vigilance PS Case No.27 dated October 2, 2019, under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018.
Investigators proved that Mishra demanded and accepted a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a consumer to reduce his electricity bill. The court sentenced him to three years of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000.
Odisha Vigilance registered the case after receiving a complaint from the consumer. Mishra, then serving as Junior Accountant, misused his position to extort money in exchange for lowering dues. Vigilance officials laid a trap and collected evidence that confirmed the bribery.
Following the conviction, Odisha Vigilance announced that it will move the competent authority to stop Mishra’s pension. Officials emphasised that strict action against corruption remains a priority and that convictions serve as deterrents for public servants engaging in bribery.
