The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially confirmed the formation of Cyclone Senyar, a weather system that intensified from a deep depression over the Strait of Malacca late Tuesday. The cyclone continued to gather strength on Wednesday morning, moving westward at nearly 10 kmph.

In a 9:13 a.m. update on X (formerly Twitter), the IMD reported that as of 5:30 a.m. on November 26, Cyclone Senyar was positioned over the Strait of Malacca and nearby parts of northeast Indonesia. The storm was centred near latitude 5.0°N and longitude 98.0°E, approximately:

  • 100 km east of Kuta Makmur, Indonesia

  • 260 km west-southwest of George Town, Malaysia

  • 600 km east-southeast of Nancowry, Nicobar Islands

  • 740 km southeast of Car Nicobar

Cyclone Senyar’s Path and Intensity

According to the IMD, the cyclonic storm is likely to retain its intensity for the next 24 hours before gradually weakening.
The system is expected to:

  • Travel almost directly west and cross the Indonesia coast by late morning on November 26

  • Move west-southwest for a brief period

  • Curve back towards the east over the next two days

Second Weather System Strengthens Over Southwest Bay of Bengal

A well-marked low-pressure area has also formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal, extending across southeast Sri Lanka and the Equatorial Indian Ocean.
The IMD says this system is likely to move north-northwest and deepen into a depression within 24 hours, adding further instability to regional weather patterns.

Very Heavy Rainfall Expected in Southern States

With two active weather systems—including one confirmed cyclone—several southern states are already experiencing intense rainfall. The IMD forecasts continued heavy to very heavy rainfall in the following regions:

Tamil Nadu

  • Heavy rain likely to continue until November 30

  • Very heavy rainfall expected between November 28–30

  • Orange alert issued for multiple districts

Kerala and Mahe

  • Heavy rainfall likely on November 26

Coastal Andhra Pradesh

  • Rain expected from November 29 to December 1

  • Very heavy rainfall forecast on November 30

Andaman and Nicobar Islands

  • Very heavy rainfall on November 26 and 27

  • Strong winds reaching 60 kmph likely until November 28

Thunderstorms and lightning are expected across several affected regions throughout the week.
