India will formally secure hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow on November 26.

The Commonwealth Sport Board recommended India’s bid after its evaluation committee assessed technical delivery, athlete experience, infrastructure, governance, and alignment with Commonwealth Sport values. India last hosted the Games in 2010 in Delhi, and now Ahmedabad will stage the multi-sport event, marking a historic milestone.

Initially, India faced competition from Abuja, Nigeria, for the 2030 edition. However, Commonwealth Sport decided to consider Abuja for 2034, supporting its future hosting ambitions. During the Assembly, members from across the Commonwealth will take the final decision after India presents its vision for the Games in Ahmedabad.

Moreover, a press note from Commonwealth Sport confirmed that the recommendation’s approval will be followed by a unique broadcast moment. The formal announcement is expected around 6:30 p.m. IST. India’s delegation includes Joint Secretary (sports) Kunal, Indian Olympic Association President P.T. Usha, and Gujarat Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi.

Furthermore, securing the 2030 Games strengthens India’s long-term ambition to host the Olympics in 2036, also proposed for Ahmedabad. The city has already demonstrated its capacity by hosting major events such as the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, Asian Aquatics Championships, and AFC Under-17 Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers. In 2026, Ahmedabad will host the Asian Weightlifting Championship and Asia Para-Archery Cup.

Ultimately, the confirmation of India’s hosting rights will mark the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games, positioning Ahmedabad as a global sports hub and reinforcing India’s growing influence in international sports.
