At the 20th G20 Summit in Johannesburg, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday presented India’s vision for a series of global initiatives aimed at strengthening international cooperation against emerging transnational threats. His proposals included creating a G20-led global alliance to dismantle the drug–terror nexus, establishing a Global Healthcare Response Team, and launching a major Africa-focused skills development programme.

Speaking at the Summit’s first plenary session, which centred on inclusive and sustainable growth, the Prime Minister emphasised the urgent need for coordinated action against international narcotics trafficking.

“To overcome the challenge of drug trafficking, especially the spread of extremely dangerous substances like fentanyl, India proposes a G20 Initiative on Countering the Drug–Terror Nexus. Let us work together to weaken this destructive economy,” Modi said.

The proposed initiative aims to integrate tools from finance, governance and security sectors to dismantle networks that fund and enable terrorism through illicit drug trade.

G20 Global Healthcare Response Team Proposed

Modi also suggested the formation of a G20 Global Healthcare Response Team, comprising trained medical professionals from member nations who can be rapidly deployed during health emergencies or natural disasters.

“We are stronger when we work together in the face of health crises and disasters,” he said, emphasising the importance of shared preparedness and collective resilience.

India Pushes for Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative

Highlighting Africa’s growing role in the global economy, the Prime Minister reiterated India’s long-standing commitment to the continent.

“India has always stood in solidarity with Africa. I am proud that during India’s G20 Presidency, the African Union became a permanent member of the G20,” he said.

To further strengthen this partnership, he proposed the G20–Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative, which aims to train and certify one million African trainers over the next decade.

Traditional Knowledge Repository Suggested

Modi also called for the creation of a G20 Global Traditional Knowledge Repository, noting India’s extensive heritage in traditional health systems and wellness practices.

“It is important that we preserve and share our collective wisdom for better global health and wellbeing,” he said.

The proposals were presented as part of India’s broader strategy to foster global collaboration, improve crisis readiness, and support inclusive development across regions.
