A large-scale eviction drive has commenced in Salia Sahi, Bhubaneswar, as the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) move forward with clearing encroachments for the 13-km parallel road connecting Ekamra Kanana to Andharua.
According to officials, 517 households have been identified for demolition in the current phase, which will continue until November 24. While some areas had been cleared earlier, authorities confirmed that the remaining stretch must be vacated to ensure uninterrupted progress on the city’s key road-connectivity project.
The eviction activities began near the Hatiasuni area, where several residents staged a peaceful sit-in to voice concerns over rehabilitation measures. Many families expressed that they want fair and adequate resettlement before being asked to vacate their homes.
“We will not allow eviction until we receive proper rehabilitation,” said one community member.
To maintain safety and avoid disruptions, officials have deployed five platoons of police personnel, along with teams from BMC, BDA, WATCO, and the Electricity Department. Heavy machinery has already been positioned at the site, and security arrangements have been strengthened.
Despite resistance from affected residents, authorities emphasise that the eviction is crucial for improving urban mobility, reducing congestion, and advancing long-term infrastructure development in the capital city.
Notably, 900 metres of Salia Sahi fall within the alignment of the new parallel road. Earlier, houses located within 200 metres had been removed. The remaining 700 metres—which includes the current 517 structures—are now scheduled for clearance under strict supervision.
