During his official visit to Odisha, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan made an unscheduled stop in Pahala to taste the state’s iconic Pahala Rasagola, a sweet renowned for its soft texture and syrupy delight.
Chouhan was accompanied by Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, who joined him in sampling the freshly made delicacy. The leaders were warmly received by locals, and the shopkeeper served them steaming hot rasagolas. Chouhan praised the sweet as “extremely soft, flavourful and unmatched”, enjoying several pieces before purchasing boxes to take with him.
Celebrating Odisha’s Culinary Heritage
The Deputy Chief Minister shared the experience on social media, calling the rasagola “more than just a dessert”, emphasizing its significance as a symbol of Odisha’s culinary heritage. He highlighted the centuries-old tradition behind its preparation and its role in spreading Odisha’s culture globally.
Locals in Pahala, a hub of sweet shops along NH-16 between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, expressed pride at the minister’s visit. Shop owners noted that the attention underscores the importance of the geographical indication (GI) tag and its contribution to promoting local livelihoods.

Chouhan’s sweet detour came during a two-day official visit to Odisha, where he attended several agricultural events, including promoting millet cultivation, meeting millet farmers, and reviewing field activities supporting the Shri Anna (millet) mission.
