Residents of Odisha woke up to biting cold on Wednesday as a cold wave gripped several districts.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that night temperatures will drop by 2–3°C over the next 24 hours.

Jharsuguda, Kandhamal, and Sundargarh emerged as the worst-affected districts. Phulbani, Sundargarh, Rourkela, and Jharsuguda are likely to record lows of 10°C. Keonjhar and Angul may see 12°C, while Dhenkanal, Koraput, and Bhadrak could hover around 13°C.

On Thursday night, Phulbani is expected to remain at 10°C. Jharsuguda, Angul, and Rourkela may dip further to 11°C. The IMD cautioned that the cold wave will persist without significant change in the coming days.

Officials urged residents to take precautions, particularly older people and children, who remain vulnerable to sudden temperature drops. The advisory stressed the importance of warm clothing and protective measures to avoid health complications.

The cold wave has disrupted daily routines across Odisha. People in affected districts reported slower morning activities and reduced outdoor movement. Farmers expressed concern about the impact of low temperatures on crops, while schools and local administrations considered precautionary steps to safeguard students.

The IMD continues to monitor weather conditions closely. Authorities remain on alert as Odisha braces for extended chilly nights. The cold wave highlights the seasonal shift and the need for communities to prepare for harsher winter conditions.
